Book Trailer Of The Week: Fallen

July12

I’ve come across two book trailers in the last week which I’ve wanted to make trailer of the week but I’ve settled on one and the other (which is equally brilliant) I will make featured next week.

It’s quite a short trailer for Fallen by Lauren Kate but I think it sets the scene just right for the book and makes me want to go out and buy it right now.

Fallen is published in the UK by Doubleday Children’s Books.

Fortune by Megan Cole
(I’m already loving the cover)
Step into the world of the mega-rich… and the mega-bitches.

Three girls. One life-changing fortune…

Madison is so over New York. Her mom won’t let her have botox and she can’t leave the city because her step-father is sick. Snoresville. So when she gets a mysterious invitation to a private party in Capri, held by billionaire music mogul Brad Masters, she’s determined to go.

Simonetta wants her mamma off her back. Of course she’s not going to give up modelling in Rome to go back to her fusty little village. When she gets her invitation, she sees the chance to lose her roots forever.

Sapphire just wants to write songs and hang out in the London record shop where she works. When she’s invited to Brad’s party, she doesn’t even want to go – but her mum seems strangely excited about it.

Madison, Simonetta and Sapphire: three girls from different worlds who are about to find out they have more in common than they think.

Book Trailer Of The Week: Before I Fall

July5

I was thinking which book trailer I should make trailer of the week this week when it suddenly hit me the only one it could possibly be.

I only learned (I think) of Before I Fall last week and one of the first things that popped up on my search was the trailer and it had me interested almost straight away – the trailer really explains the story and sets I think the right tone for what is to come if you read the book. What do you think?

For Review
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (Paperback)
They say ‘live every day as if it’s your last’ – but you never actually think it’s going to be. At least I didn’t.

The thing is, you don’t get to know when it happens. You don’t remember to tell your family that you love them or – in my case – remember to say goodbye to them at all.

But what if, like me, you could live your last day over and over again? Could you make it perfect? If your whole life flashed before your eyes, would you have no regrets? Or are there some things you’d want to change…?

Bought
I went on a tiny bit of an Amazon shopping spree this week and bought a couple of books that I’ve been meaning to get for a little while.

Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce (Hardcover)
(I love the shiny red on the hardcover)
The story of Scarlett and Rosie March, two highly-skilled sisters who have been hunting Fenris (werewolves) – who prey on teen girls – since Scarlett lost her eye years ago while defending Rosie in an attack. Scarlett lives to destroy the Fenris, and she and Rosie lure them in with red cloaks (a colour the wolves can’t resist), though Rosie hunts more out of debt to her sister than drive.

But things seem to be changing. The wolves are getting stronger and harder to fight, and there has been a rash of news reports about countless teenage girls being brutally murdered in the city. Scarlett and Rosie soon discover the truth: wolves are banding together in search of a Potential Fenris – a man tainted by the pack but not yet fully changed. Desperate to find the Potential to use him as bait for a massive werewolf extermination, the sisters move to the city with Silas, a young woodsman and long time family friend who is deadly with an axe. Meanwhile, Rosie finds herself drawn to Silas and the bond they share not only drives the sisters apart, but could destroy all they’ve worked for.

Della Says: OMG by Keris Stainton
Della’s over the moon when she kisses her long-standing crush at a party – but then she discovers her diary has disappeared…

When scans of embarrassing pages are sent to her mobile and appear on Facebook, Della’s distraught – how can she enjoy her first proper romance when someone, somewhere, knows all her deepest, darkest secrets?

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick(hardcover)
A sacred oath, a fallen angel, a forbidden love…This darkly romantic story features our heroine, Nora Grey, a seemingly normal teenage girl with her own shadowy connection to the Nephilim, and super-alluring bad boy, Patch, now her deskmate in biology class. Together they find themselves at the centre of a centuries-old feud between a fallen angel and a Nephilim…Forced to sit next to Patch in science class, Nora attempts to resist his flirting, though gradually falls for him against her better judgment. Meanwhile creepy things are going on with a mysterious stalker following her car, breaking into her house and attacking her best friend, Vi. Nora suspects Patch, but there are other suspects too – not least a new boy who has transferred from a different college after being wrongly accused of murdering his girlfriend. And he seems to have taken a shine to Nora…Love certainly is dangerous…and someone is going to have to make the ultimate sacrifice for it.

Arizona – Beautiful Dead Book 2 by Eden Maguire
There’s been no sign of the Beautiful Dead for weeks. Darina achingly misses Phoenix all over again. But surely he will return with the rest of the Beautiful Dead as so much still remains unresolved. It’s been ten months since Arizona drowned in Hartmann Lake. Suicide, it would seem. But something doesn’t add up. Drowning herself in a hidden-away lake does not sound like strong, confident, Arizona: Ellerton High School’s high-maintenance drama queen.

Darina needs to help Arizona the way she helped Jonas. But time is running out …

What did you get this week? Happy Reading

Review: Twilight

July3

Author: Stephanie Meyer

Publisher: Atom (22nd March 2010)

Pages: 434

ISBN: 978-1-904233-65-7

When Isabella (Bella) Swan moves away from Phoenix to live with her Dad Charlie in gloomy old Forkes she doesn’t expect to meet the very person that could change her life forever, the very mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen.

With golden eyes and porcelain skin and a voice which could mesmerise you into doing anything Edward is at the same time irresistible and impenetrable. But he has a dark hidden secret. Until now.

Bella’s determined to find out what he’s hiding and as she gets closer to him and begins to unravel the mystery she’s putting herself and those she loves in danger but by the time she realises will it be too late to back out?

I come to Twilight with a love of paranormal YA fiction (especially those with vampires and romance involved) my first fictional experience with vampires was the fantastic Buffy The Vampire Slayer (and the subsequent Angel) which makes me wonder why I didn’t come to Twilight sooner – I really wish I had.

I have to be honest the first chapter started to make me think that those reviews which have criticised the first book were right as I struggled to get into it (I expect the negative reviews were playing on my mind) but not one to put a book down I read on.

And I’m so glad I did because once I’d got past what I think was a mental block I really got into Twilight and really enjoyed the chemistry between Bella and Edward making it really hard to put down. Sometimes not putting it down till midnight (this is quite late for me – honest!).

I loved the way that Edward found Bella’s clumsiness (so many near death experiences) so appealing and attractive and I really enjoyed the way their relationship built over the first half of the book. As Bella began discovering more parts of the Edward mystery I really enjoyed seeing how she explained these (which would sound obscure to the uninitiated) to Edward and his reactions.

The second half of the book / last quarter things really change when a new threat is introduced (and at this point I’m really glad I’d forgotten the film) as I was completely surprised by several elements of the plot and on more than one occasion the story gave me goosebumps.

Throughout the book the comments from both Edward and Bella never failed to make me laugh in the right places and can I say that I am jealous of Edwards ability to play the piano – I suppose this is what comes when you can have many decades of practice!

I was intrigued by Meyer’s interpretation of the vampires, going against what I normally expect of vampires. Sure I’m used to the vegetarian vampire – it’s something I’ve seen before but there are some things which I was surprised by one of which was the reason Meyer’s vampires don’t go out in the light.

I have been converted from somebody who wasn’t sure I would like it to (dare I say it) a fan of the Twilight Saga and I already have New Moon on my bookshelf waiting patiently for me and I can’t wait to start it (but I can prolong it a bit – then I can make the series last a bit longer ;) )

Oh! And I’m going to re-watch the film tomorrow!
