Anyway, here’s the trailer:

Review: Wintercraft

April28

Review: WintercraftAuthor: Jenna Burtenshaw

Publisher: Headline (13th May 2010)

Pages: 278

ISBN: 978-07553-7096-2

Wintercraft is a very special book, scrap that it’s a very powerful book that would allow the Skilled (a group of people who can see into the veil between the living and the dead) to push the boundaries of human life. In the past the High Council of Albion have used this book to perform experiements on the Skilled liviing in Albion. But it was stolen and has been hidden away ever since.

Kate Winters’ parents were taken from her 10 years ago by wardens working for The High Council and now when Morvane’s citizens thought they were safe they have returned, harvesting Morvane and handing Kate to Silas Dane, one of the coucils most feared collectors and her life is about to change forever.

Wintercraft’s characters really hook you in almost from the word go and after only a short amout of time I started really caring about what happened to them and I found my feelings towards some of them change throughout the book.

The world created is a vivid one with lots of things to discover and it’s many layers make it the perfect playground for the characters and the story. The pace will never let you put the book down with each chapter drawing you forward to the next bringing you to a conclusion which nicely ends the book but at the same time leaves you wanting to know what happens next.

It’s an adventure story full of mystery and magic which shows the strength of friendship – a must read.

This review was based on an early reading copy of Wintercraft.

Review: The Dead House

April18

Review: The Dead HouseAuthor: Anne Cassidy

Publisher: Hodder Children’s Books (16th July 2009)

Pages: 264

ISBN: 978-0340-93228-5

Lauren Ashe’s step Dad, Donny has got a new job teaching in London uprooting Lauren, Jessica (her aunt) back to London where Lauren used to live 10 years ago when something tragic happened – her Mum and younger sister Daisy were found dead. Lauren’s Dad, Robert Slater was charged with their murder based on Lauren’s evidence and she hasn’t spoken to him since.

If the trauma of moving back to London near the house where it all happened isn’t enough she’s discovering that her Dad might not have been guilty after all. But if he didn’t murder her Mum and Daisy then who did?

The book moves through at a very quick pace and in places had my hairs standing on end. The idea itself that a child gave evidence that would see her father put away only to discover 10 years later that they may not have seen the full picture is a horrible thought and quite simply an irresistible read.

The many sub-plots (don’t worry I won’t give these away) which run through the story breath extra life into the characters showing how they react when things are going well in some aspects of their life while the beliefs they hold are falling apart around them.

As you would expect a book like this which looks back at effectively a case which is 10 years old can’t avoid looking back but unlike other books I’ve read these flashbacks and dreams were expertly handled, never interfering with the flow of the story and constantly moving the plot forward.

Had I seen this book online or in a book shop I’m not sure I would have picked it up as it’s not normally the type of cover I go for but it was free when I bought The Vampire Diaries Volume 2 and It’s very well worth a read – I will certainly be looking out for future Anne Cassidy stories.

Follow Friday These Fab Young Adult Authors

April16

Before I get going on this post I should point out that by the title I mean authors who write for teens / young adults. I did consider using the title Follow Friday These Fab Teen Authors but then thought that would have been completely misleading.

Anyhow, every Friday on Twitter something called Follow Friday happens where we recommend to other Twitter users who we think they should be following. It’s easy to spot on a Friday as the hashtags #followfriday and #ff appear all over the place. Then you can browse the accounts of those recommended and decide if you would like to take up the recommendation and follow them. I find a lot of new people to follow this way :)

So I thought that today and next Friday I will post a follow friday on here, this weeks list will be (as the title suggests) for Young Adult Authors and next week will be for Young Adult blogs. I know this list will be far from complete as I’ve only been tweeting for a couple of months and I’m sure you all have plenty of suggestions so please share away in the comments.

I hope you find the list useful!

As I said it’s not in any way shape or form a complete list but any suggestions you add to the comments I will add to this list and as I find more I will add.

Coming Soon: Wintercraft By Jenna Burtenshaw

April13

Coming Soon: Wintercraft By Jenna BurtenshawI’m going to come out and say it – I can’t wait for Wintercraft to come out (and this is only partly based on the gorgeous trailer which you can see here).

The Blurb
Ten years ago Kate Winters’ parents were taken by the High Council’s wardens to help with the country’s war effort.
Now the wardens are back…and prisoners, including Kate’s uncle Artemis, are taken south on the terrifying Night Train. Kate and her friend Edgar are hunted by a far more dangerous enemy. Silas Dane – the High Council’s most feared man – recognises Kate as one of the Skilled; a rare group of people able to see through the veil between the living and the dead. His spirit was damaged by the High Council’s experiments into the veil, and he’s convinced that Kate can undo the damage and allow him to find peace.
The knowledge Kate needs lies within Wintercraft – a book thought to be hidden deep beneath the graveyard city of Fume. But the Night of Souls, when the veil between life and death is at its thinnest, is just days away and the High Council have their own sinister plans for Kate and Wintercraft.

You can find out more about Wintercraft on the brand new (just launched) Wintercraft website where you can also download ‘the thrilling first chapter’ (I’m just about to) and enter a competition where you could win a copy of the book.

Wintercraft will be published by Headline on the 13th May 2010.

Coming Soon: My Life On TV By Kimberly Greene

April8

Coming Soon: My Life On TV By Kimberly GreeneMy Life On TV is the third book in the series My Sister’s A Pop Star series by Kimberly Greene described by the publishers, Usborne Children’s Books as a “fantastically funny third book”.

From the sounds of the blurb from Amazon I’m looking forward to this one which is released later this month.

The Blurb
This is the fantastically funny third title to the “My Sister’s A Pop Star” series, starring straight-talking, super-klutzy Sam. Sam’s life is turned upside down when her pop-star sister Danni Devine announces her decision to move out of their house, and out of the limelight. This means cancelling Danni’s reality TV show, “The Devine Life”, and, since their home is owned by the TV company, Sam and her mum are soon to be made homeless. So when Robert, Danni’s manager, has an idea for a show about a girl at a horse-riding academy with Sam in the starring role, she has some tough choices to make. Watching Danni struggle with the pressures of fame has turned Sam off stardom for life, but with Danni leaving showbiz, who’ll provide for her family? Unfortunately, Sam’s no natural when it comes to performing, especially when she’s acting opposite a truly handsome but horrible co-star. Truth is, Sam’s more into this cute guy, Carlos but he’s so not into celeb-chic and is all about keeping it real. Sam’s torn between following her heart and looking out for her family, but while she tries to work out who she is and what she really wants, the cameras keep rolling…Celebrities and reality TV are the hottest of topics and down-to-earth Sam tells it all, in hilarious style, from the glamour and backstabbing, to the truth behind the scenes.
